VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)
Telephone Systems
|
What is VoIP?
VoIP allows you to make telephone calls using a computer
network, over a data network like the Internet. VoIP
converts the voice signal from your telephone into a
digital signal that travels over the internet then converts
it back at the other end so you can speak to anyone
with a regular phone number.
VoIP offers free and cheap phone calls over the internet
for business communication.
VoIP can be implemented in several ways, from a software
program on your computer used with a headset and microphone
to adaptors used with regular analogue home phones or
you can use dedicated VoIP phones which look and act
like regular phones but have specially designed chips
to improve call quality.Select Service Ltd offer
a full range of VoIP phone systems from major manufactures
including Splicecom, NEC, Mitel and Inter Tel.
|
 |
An VoIP phone system gives
you the freedom to call local or anywhere in the world
using the Internet to provide low cost calls and using
the very latest technology at very affordable pricing.
More and more small and medium sized companies are
moving over to VoIP phone systems to enjoy the savings
that can be achieved. Our systems start from 4 to 10,000
extensions with all the features expected of a business
telephone system.

Small and medium size business VoIP
Phone Systems
|
| A VoIP phone
service where the central call control and switching,
typically done by the box on the wall in your office,
is performed by a central server at a remote Internet
hosting centre. It is, simply, a "PBX in the sky". To
use a VoIP service, customers will have telephones on
their desk which connect out to the PBX server across
broadband Internet. This provides a number of benefits,
including: |
| VoIP Phone System call costs |
|
The opportunities for deriving savings
in VoIP arise from the fact that it has a fundamentally
different cost base to conventional telephone systems
in that it allows you to share costs with your computer
network. For example:
Network efficiency
With circuit-switched calls, ports in both the originating
and receiving switches are tied up for the duration
of a call, whereas VoIP with its virtual circuits, makes
more efficient use of available network bandwidth. The
integration of voice and data effectively fills up the
data communications channels efficiently, thus providing
bandwidth consolidation.
Infrastructure investment reduction
VoIP takes advantage of the same equipment that is driving
the Internet. The hardware and protocols for VoIP are
largely off-the-shelf, interchangeable and developed
by numerous vendors.
|

|
Lowered cost of expansion
VoIP is more scalable. Traditional telephone networks
are geographically restricted by their circuit switches,
with a switch required for each service area. With VoIP
technology, a soft switch can be installed at the regional
level, allowing multiple markets to utilise it, with
only limited equipment required locally.
Call charges reduction
VoIP is used by companies to eliminate call charges
between their offices by using their data network to
carry inter-office calls. They may also use VoIP to
reduce the costs of calls outside the company by carrying
them to the nearest point on their network before handing
them off to the PSTN. This gives them an alternative
to the PSTN that can continue to grow and be scaled
to fit their needs.
Network simplification and consolidation
One network is easier to manage than two. Moreover since
VoIP exchange is based on software rather than hardware,
it is easier to alter, configure and maintain, for instance,
it results in a substantial improvement in move/add/change
of telephony circuits and substantial reduction in staffing
and administration costs.
Additionally, for the service provider, VoIP systems
are typically computer applications running on high
specification PC servers, rather than traditional telephone
switches, which mean the costs of delivering the service
are less than that for traditional telephony services.

VoIP Phone Systems - What do I need?
|
| There are
3 main options: |
 |
A software VoIP phone: a piece of software
that you run on your computer that allows you to make
and receive phone calls. You then use this with a headset
or a speaker phone to provide the microphone and speakers.
A VoIP adaptor: a physical adaptor which allows
you to plug a traditional analogue or cordless phone
into an IP system. This is helpful if you are upgrading
to an IP phone system as they allow your own phones
to be used.
An VoIP Phone: this is a full telephone which
is 100% VoIP. It will plug into an Ethernet port on
your broadband network.
