On This Day - 8th December

On This Day in 1980

John Lennon was shot dead by Mark Chapman outside the musician's New York's Dakota apartment building on 8 December 1980.

The 40-year-old former Beatle was shot several times as he entered the Dakota, his luxury apartment building on Manhattan's Upper West Side, opposite Central Park, at 2300 local time. He was rushed in a police car to St Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center, where he died. His wife, Yoko Ono, who is understood to have witnessed the attack, was with him.

50 Years Of  The Motorway
The first, Lancashire's eight-mile Preston bypass, opened in 1958 and now forms part of the M6.

Soon after opening, the motorway had to be closed temporarily for resurfacing, when the road surface was damaged by a sudden frost. -  Some things never change.

Since then, more than 2,200 miles of motorway have been constructed across the UK allowing traffic to flow freely!

The M6 is Britain's longest motorway, stretching 236 miles (380km) from Rugby to the Scottish border. The shortest motorway, stretching for just 300m (984ft), is the A635(M), in Manchester.

Mitel 5000 Call Server improves on the Inter-Tel 5000

Mitel 5000 Version 3.0
The Inter-Tel CS5000 Range has now been re-branded as the Mitel 5000 Call Server and has a new release of software.

Since the merger with Mitel, the joint development teams have worked to make the Mitel range of phones work with the Inter-Tel 5000. The latest version of software allows the addition of these exciting and innovative phones to existing 5000 systems. If you'd like to refresh your phones, or take advantage of Bluetooth headsets, cableless WLAN connectivity or DECT handsets.

Mitel 5000 v3.0 Call Server Product Key Features Include:

Scheduled Backups. Using the Session Manager you can now schedule database backups to be performed at the frequency and times you specify. This system database and (optionally) voice processor data is saved to a local computer and can be used for future data recovery.

BVM System Recording Audio Enhancement. This audio enhancement for system recordings applies to CS-5200 and CS-5400 Base Server (BS) BVM systems only. Prior to v3.0, system recordings for BVM used the G.729A codec. For v3.0, you can now choose between the default G.729A codec and the G.726-32 codec. G.726-32kbps recordings offer higher voice quality. However, they require four times the space on the compact flash-type memory card to store the same recording lengths.

Increased Employee Efficiency: mitelss powerful, easy-to-use interfaces and centralized directories put users in control of their call servers and devices.

NuPoint Messenger External Voice Mail System.

Faster Information Flow: Inter-Tel's presence awareness and intelligent call server routing applications provide quicker and more reliable connections.

Caller ID Forwarding. Caller ID forwarding allows Call Processing (CP) to send Caller ID information from any incoming services to the public or private network using Primary Rate Interface (PRI) or Basic Rate Interface (BRI) Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) circuits.

ISDN PRI Two B-Channel Transfer. The ISDN PRI Two B-Channel Transfer (TBCT) feature is an ISDN optimization supplementary service offered by the PSTN. You must purchase support for the TBCT from the CO. The TBCT feature optimizes trunk-to-trunk calls by releasing them from the PBX and connecting them through the Central Office (CO). This optimization removes the trunk-to-trunk call legs from the system and allows the system to reuse the 2 B-channels for new calls.

Anytime, Anywhere Connectivity: Wireless support enables instant voice and data connections from anywhere.

Basic Voice Mail (BVM) and Enterprise Messaging (EM) Option Swap: 7 and 9 Keys.

Lower Total Costs: Network-based voice communications and Inter-Tel's Data Transport Services help to reduce monthly costs.

Flexible and Cost-Effective Growth: Expands to support up to 250 users and multiple sites. Functionality can be added with Inter-Tel and third-party applications and devices.

BVM and EM Voice Profile for Internet Mail (VPIM) Networking. BVM and EM can communicate with other voice processing systems using VPIM. This feature requires a v3.0 system and when using EM, it requires EM v2.1 or later.

File-Based Music-On-Hold (MOH). The File-Based MOH feature expands the existing MOH source beyond the built-in audio port located on the back of the Mitel 5000 chassis. You can now use the compact flash-type memory card to store up to five audio files to use for MOH. There is also a new MOH Converter utility that is installed with DB Programming. This utility is necessary to convert your audio files to the format required by the Mitel 5000.

BVM Play-Only Mailbox. The Play-Only Mailbox new feature applies to BVM only. The BVM “play-only” mailbox option prevents the caller from leaving a message. The “play-only” mailbox is similar to an "announcement-only" application where it plays the designated greeting once and then the call automatically disconnects after the greeting finishes playing.

Caller ID Enhancements. Some COs are now requiring that calls have Caller ID set. Caller ID functionality is enhanced for this release to meet the CO requirement. This release adds the “Calling Party Number” and “Calling Party Name” fields to the Endpoints, Applications, and CO Trunk Group settings in DB Programming.

External USB Modem. The Axxess/5000 Modem Kit (part number 550.3026) has been updated to include a new Universal Serial Bus (USB) to Asynchronous (ASYNC) cable (part number 813.1873) that allows you to attach an external modem to the Mitel 5000 system. After all connections are established, you can configure, manage, or debug the system through this modem connection.

Enabling VAT Reduced from 17.5% to 15%

Darling, Christmas is here!

The Chancellor has announced that as of the 1st December VAT drops from 17.5% to just 15% - Whoopee you say !
Well, lets be honest, it's not much of a giveaway is it?
Companies have been given until the 14th December to change every thing to the new rate, many say they will not bother as it's not worth the aggravation and just pocket the difference themselves.

So the good news......

Enabling Communications believes everyone should pass on the savings and have lowered their prices in line with the VAT changes.
You will be pleased to know we didn't  follow the Governments example: reduce the vat on petrol and then increase it  (in fuel duty) to bring it back to the same price.  We thought about following Darling's example, reduce the VAT as he demonstrated and then add a little,  we thought  maybe an 'Enabling Duty'. If it works for them .........Only joking, we have done what is fair - reduced it.

Look out for the .99p  (£4.99, £49.99 and £199.99's etc) that should all change for 12 months - but will it?  Know anybody who has not reduced the VAT then you can Name and Shame them at a new website: VAT Rats

Talking of the £4.99p's etc., do any of you know how it came about?  In times gone by it was to stop staff pocketing the £5.00 as they had to register the sale on the till to give the 1p change.

The Chancellor  has reduced VAT from the 1st December from 17.5 to 15 per cent for thirteen months in a pre-Christmas giveaway.

So it's time to change all your price lists, website prices, invoicing program, spreadsheets, online purchasing accounts, checkout tills, newspaper adds,  television adverts and any thing else that mentions  VAT on it.

And guess what, in 13 months we all get to change all these items again - Bets please on 10%, 20%, 30%, 150%

The Quickest Way To Dublin

One of our services engineers was on route to Dublin last week, when a few miles from his destination he pulled of the main route towards a small village hoping to find a cosy pub to enjoy a traditional pub lunch.

About an hour later, having been warmly welcomed, feed, watered and full to his fatness he decided to get back on the road. Turning to one of the locals he had enjoyed company with during his lunch break he asked "Which is the quickest way to Dublin from here?", "Are you walking or driving Sir?" came the reply, "Driving" he confirmed. Communication by fax is essential to business life. Fax has many major advantages over email. It is well accepted, very reliable and much safer. Most important business communication such as orders and contracts usually is by fax.

The function of a Fax Server
The traditional fax machine is not so practical anymore for an organisation of more than a few people. The flow of documents to and from a traditional fax machine cannot be controlled, even though it is the most important correspondence of the company. At the same time sending and receiving faxes will cause a lot of walking around. The Fax Servers made by Vidicode are a complete solution for fax communication adapted to the ways people in businesses are used to communicating. Fax Servers are the link between PC’s, networks and email within the company and the security and reliability of fax communication with the outside world.

How a Fax Server works
The Fax Server has two extra functions next to sending and receiving faxes. The first important function can best be compared with that of the telephone system for telephony: the Fax Server takes care of internal distribution of incoming and outgoing faxes. It allows everyone in the company to send and receive faxes from his workplace, by integration with email and other ways. The second important function of the Fax Server is the automated archiving. The Fax Server is a database of all faxes ever sent or received. This gives the organisation unparalleled control over its external communication by fax.

Three ways to access your faxes
The Fax Server will better than ever before take care of access to and the control over your faxes. There are several ways in which you have access to your faxes, all of them highly automated.

The connection with your email
Faxes received on a Fax Server are automatically distributed via email. The principle is that you assign a fax number to every person or department. The Fax Server will connect to the mail server and deliver the faxes to their final destination. There is no limitation to the number of fax numbers that your organisation may have, as far as the Fax Server is concerned this is just a table. Therefore, to have as an example 300 fax numbers on 8 lines or channels would be a typical solution.

Network access to the Fax Server
The complete collection of faxes sent and received on your Fax Server will remain available for many years until the hard disk becomes full (if this ever happens). The hard disk of the Fax Server operates as an archive storing up to 2 million pages. This means that all faxes of several years will be online available on your LAN. The software that comes with the Fax Server presents the contents of the hard disk as a database. Therefore, a simple query on your PC will within seconds find any fax for you. Access to faxes on the Fax Server is restricted by password and the Fax Server will only present to you the faxes that you are entitled to see. The network access can be used as an alternative to receiving faxes by email. An icon in your taskbar will show when new faxes have come in that you are entitled to read.

Up to 16 fax lines on one printer
If you like, as with normal fax machines, to print all faxes that come in, then that is the other option. The Fax Server can send all incoming faxes direct to a network printer. When many faxes that come in are printed, a network printer is the best way to get high quality output at the lowest cost for supplies.

The advantages of the Vidicode Fax Servers
Some of the special concepts used in the Fax Servers may seem technical but still deserve to be mentioned because they are of great value to the users:

Proof of the origin of received faxes
The identification of a fax is no proof of origin. It can be changed by anyone using the machine. Calling line identification as available on normal telephone systems is the real evidence of where the fax came from. The facility is always present on digital lines. On analogue lines it must be enabled by the telephone company. In all cases it is of high value to the user of the Fax Server and when available it will always be shown in the database.

Optimised control of fax routing
The idea is that you can control the routing of incoming faxes based on the fax number by just maintaining a list. It has never been so easy to create a fax number for your company. For every fax the email address that the fax was delivered to, will show in the database. While the distribution is automated, the manager can still immediately see who has received what and therefore stays in control. System management can in turn control the authorisation of managers to see faxes of employees or colleagues.

Internet technology
A Fax Server is not a PC, but a system dedicated to nothing else than being a Fax Server. On the network it behaves as a generic FTP-server. The communication to the email server is with the industry standard SMTP protocol. Consequently, there are no special requirements for the network. Installation is so easy and straightforward for every systems manager.

Archiving the communication of traditional fax machines (optional)
A unique feature of the Fax Servers is the capability to record fax transmissions of traditional fax machines. These recorded fax transmissions can be reproduced on the screen and printed on a printer just like any other archived fax. The application is that in real life employees like to keep a fax machine to send handwritten letters or forms. Because these transmissions are automatically recorded, the archiving remains complete.

A CD recorder for back-ups (option)
Because of the high value of the fax archive, a back-up medium might be required. Therefore an optional CD recorder can be installed. Faxes are automatically archived on CD with a capacity of about 17.500 pages per CD. The Fax Server will send an email to the systems manager when than CD becomes full and has to be replaced. The Fax Server Access System offers an alternative way to create backups on a PC or network server.

John Sergeant Quits Strictly Come Dancing

The 64 year old ex-political journalist has pulled out of the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing television show. This has caused lots of gossip at Enabling's office, some say it's wrong and he should of gone long ago, whilst other say he was the star of the show.

The show's judges will be pleased while the public will be disappointed. It appears John was worried about winning and making the show, while entertaining, a farce for the other dancers. It will be interesting to see if the extremely successful show's ratings go up or down after his announcement.

I'm sure the chatter in Enabling's office will like offices all over the country will continue, while John is set to make one more appearance this Saturday for a farewell dance.
